Which is the southernmost point of INDIA?????
Indira Point is situated on the island of Great Nicobar in the Nicobar Islands, eastern Indian Ocean, and it represents the southernmost point of land in the territory of India. The point is located in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is named in honour of Indira Gandhi. It was formerly known by various names, including Pygmalion Point, Parsons Point and, for a brief period of time, India Point.[citation needed]
Although Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the mainland of the Indian subcontinent itself, Indira Point was the farthest south on Indian soil until the tsunami generated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake inundated much of its area, partly submerging the lighthouse. However, geologists have stated that the sea is slowly starting to retreat back to its original position.
